Get the bookAn entrepreneur turned into freelancer turned into consultant, Sonja’s experience in web development and design reaches far and wide.
After realising that her dream of becoming an artist might not be the easiest career path, Sonja decided to go study information technology at the Tampere University of Applied Sciences. She shortly joined the ProAcademy study program where students run their own business for the duration of 2,5 years and learn entrepreneurship. Her team’s business was called Poikkeama, a marketing and event agency.
After graduation Sonja wanted to see the world and left for a tour of Asia and Australia. While traveling she freelanced in web development and design, which she continued to do in the United States after a short layover in Finland. Upon her return she went to work for Frantic, a digital product agency, as a web developer. She was driving many of Frantic’s transformation projects and was also working with technical concepting.
“Columbia Road was able to lure me in with the strategic attitude towards digital sales and the pure-hearted development intentions for the ecommerce sector. I also wanted to grow as a designer and Columbia Road offers me a great opportunity to mix design and development, as well as analytics and marketing automation, to mention a few. I’ll be able to take over the whole ecommerce vertical,” says Sonja with enthusiasm.
“Sonja is a sales oriented developer who knows a lot about running a business. She’s a quick problem solver, in both technology and design. She’s very skilled at driving projects forwards and creating cohesion in the team,” says Lauri Eloranta, Managing Partner at Columbia Road.
Off work she’s into trying out a lot of different sports like acrobatics, yoga and pole dancing - next up is floorball! She loves to spend time at the summer cottage with some friends and a nice bottle of wine. Sonja also continues to do some design freelancing, as a way to learn more, and she’s active in the WordPress community and is part of the team organizing WP Helsinki events and meetups.
