Joakim Fridlund joins Columbia Road

Hi Joakim, How did you get good at what you do?

I studied computer engineering for three years at KTH Kista. I have always had an interest in simplifying things or processes. This led me into the field of engineering. I enjoy complex problems, with as beautiful and simple solutions as possible.

Where have you earned your spurs?

I studied visual effects in my earlier days but enjoyed the technical side more than the designing. I worked in various trades throughout my career, but everything led me to thinking about optimisation and problem solving. After I realised that there is a career in that field I started at KTH and I now have a bachelor's degree in computer engineering.

Why Columbia Road?

Columbia Road had the mentality and culture of “let’s make it happen” and that nothing is too difficult if you want it badly enough. As I usually say, how hard can it be? Also, the thin walls between different departments where not one role is set in stone keeps me interested. I’m always looking for something new, something exciting, and I feel Columbia Road is built for just that.

What makes your heart beat a little faster?

In my free time I enjoy meeting new interesting people and doing spontaneous trips and activities. It’s also always great to go back home to Öland to visit my family to get out of the big city life for a while. I also enjoy solving problems outside the computer world; this takes the form of bouldering!
