Get the bookHi Anssi, How did you get good at what you do?
I have a diverse educational background ranging from social sciences to information technology and business. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in human behaviour, which led me to study sociology at the University of Tampere. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree, I wanted to add something different to the mix. I applied to IT University of Copenhagen, where I studied Digital Innovation and Management – a program applying social science methods to information management and networks.
At work, I try to take advantage of my multidisciplinary background by changing my perspective on a regular basis and seeing issues from multiple angles, whether it be from a technical, commercial, or customer experience point of view.
Where have you earned your spurs?
While studying at ITU, I worked in an in-house team where I coordinated a website rollout in multiple countries. The work was fun and challenging, and I got to work with many different stakeholders from developers to product managers and category owners.
After finishing my studies, I joined a digital marketing agency where I learned the role of digital sales in retail, B2B and subscription business. I managed paid advertisement accounts for international companies and learned the ins and outs of performance marketing. I also had the chance to be a part of a new office launch here in Helsinki which strengthened my project management skills and taught me a great deal of get-stuff-done attitude.

I had been following Columbia Road for quite many years and I was fascinated by the unique way of approaching digital sales and marketing. I felt like this is a place to learn from the best while working on interesting projects and where you can actually impact your own work. I’m happy it turned out to be true!

What makes your heart beat a little faster?
I’m into music and I’ve been playing in many bands over the years. I can get overly excited about a nicely mixed snare drum sound or a great pop melody. I’ve learned that pushing music projects forward is not that different from the work we do here – it’s all about having smart people, all with their own unique talents, working together and someone making sure the right things happen at the right time.
